Red Bellied Piranha

Red Bellied Piranha

Red Bellied Piranha 5cm

  • Breed Information

Pygocentrus nattereri  - These fish have a deep dark body with golden flecks and a blunt face (and big teeth).

Found originally in the Amazon and Paraguay River basins, these fish have an undeserved reputation as killers. In fact they are quite peaceful and will only generally predate on sick or dying fish or scavenge. They are quite shy and prefer a sandy substrate and bogwood or rocks and caves, no live plants though as these will be eaten. These fish grow large and create a lot of waste so a large well filtered aquarium is essential. Care should be taken when putting your hand in the aquarium as these fish can become aggressive when frightened and have been known to nip.
