Wild Type Axolotl

Wild Type Axolotl 12cm

  • Breed information

Ambystoma mexicanum - These aquatic creatures have  a long slender body which is greenish brown colour with darker brown spots.

Native to lake Xochimilco, in the Valley of Mexico, axolotls also inhabit the canals and waterways of Mexico City although it is now uncommon in the wild with most animals in the trade being tank bred. These quirky creatures are best kept in a tank without substrate (due to them being a bit daft and eating it then suffering with gastrointestinal problems) and very little or dim lighting. If you must use a substrate then larger rocks or unglazed ceramic tiles can provide your axolotl grip without being in danger of being swallowed accidentally. Although not aggressive, axolotls are predators and will eat anything it can fit in its mouth (including other axolotls) so best kept on their own. They must be maintained in a lower temperature than most other fish so please ensure you can keep the aquarium at around 16-18 Celsius, anything over 22 can be harmful so the tank should be placed well away from sunlight or radiators.

    Maximum size: 30cm

    Lifespan: 8-10 years

    Temperature: 16-18 degrees celsius

    Tank requirements: Filter & Oxygen.

    Tank Mates: None recommended.

Feeding: Will need live food, earthworms are the best and are available from your local bait shop and can be kept alive in a tub for a period of time. Other options are frozen brineshrimp that can be kept in the freezer and defrosted as required.
